The Challenge
John Hancock wanted to explore new ways to strengthen customer relationships and promote their insurance, investment, and retirement products. Their goal was to conceptualize a mobile app that would let users provide feedback, interact with brand content, and earn rewards for their participation.
The app would serve as both an engagement tool and a brand education platform, while tapping into the power of gamification. With only 48 hours on the clock, the challenge demanded fast, creative thinking and polished visual design.
The Solution
Using Topcoder’s global design community, John Hancock launched a high-speed design challenge to capture visual concepts for the “Get Rewarded” mobile application. Designers were tasked with crafting an intuitive user interface that offered personalized content, gamified interactions, and a conversational chatbot experience.
Participants focused on features like reward tracking, polls, content submission, profile creation, and intelligent recommendations. The visual designs showcased how customers could interact naturally with the brand while earning points and discovering new products.

The Result
The Impact
Within just two days, John Hancock received 17 unique and high-quality submissions from around the world. The designs provided compelling ideas on how to make financial services more engaging and personalized through mobile experiences.
The company was able to gather fresh UI/UX ideas, identify features to prioritize, and showcase design talent at their internal innovation workshop. The fast-paced initiative supported John Hancock’s mission to innovate around customer-centricity.
