The Challenge

A top 500 insurance provider set out to validate the usability and performance of its LiveWell Android mobile application. With an upcoming release deadline, the company needed a fast, scalable solution to test across a wide variety of Android devices and usage contexts. Traditional testing methods wouldn't meet the speed and breadth required.

The goal was to uncover functional flaws, UI inconsistencies, and UX gaps through real user interaction—without long lead times or internal team strain.

The Solution

Topcoder launched a crowdsourced unstructured testing challenge within just 24 hours of the initial request. Over a 9-day period, testers explored the LiveWell app across more than 20 combinations of Android devices. The community reported functional bugs, UI inconsistencies, and usability friction points—delivering not just issues, but also actionable UX suggestions. This rapid testing process allowed the customer to simulate real-world usage scenarios and gather insights from a diverse group of users across devices and regions.

The Impact

The project yielded 403 validated issues and suggestions—spanning functional bugs, visual inconsistencies, and usability challenges. These insights came from 13 skilled testers selected from 60 registrants. The balanced split of issues (35% Functional, 30% UI, and 35% UX) offered a comprehensive view of how users experienced the app.

The customer used this data to prioritize fixes and polish the product, ultimately improving app stability and user satisfaction before broader rollout.
